This module covers the concept of ship structural design principals and characteristics in preparing the ship drawing required by classification societies and the statutory bodies. Rationale for inclusion of course in the Programme is to expose the student on the principles and characteristics behind the design consideration of the ship types, structural considerations, scantling and strength and their importance during preparation of ship drawing for classification society’s approval and the requirement of statutory bodies. These works are essential to prepare the students in their design work when they are on the job.

This course will provide you the fundamentals of ship engineering drawing and develop the skills and knowledge associated with the reading and interpretation of technical drawings, ship drawings, the application of geometric construction and the detailing of components by freehand sketching. The students also will be provided with the competency to correct identify and interpret the correct development methods used for geometric construction, Parallel Line Development, Radial Line Development and Triangulation Development Methods. The students also will be able to use the appropriate drawing equipment to perform the drawing exercise. The students will be able to create the technical drawings containing lines of correct form and weight, symbols, dimensions and labels and with correct placement of views and appropriate scale. This course also will provide the students with the competency to perform basic lofting techniques and to apply the procedures used for lofting out and taking off the lines of small vessels.
